Laser Skin Treatments are among the most popular anti aging treatments available according to the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery. Most laser skin procedures are performed to reverse the signs of sun-damaged and over-exposed skin;this can include improving your appearance by ridding yourself of age spots or deeper wrinkles that you need smoothed out. Lucky for you with today’s newer technologies that mean you have many choices when it comes to which type of laser you may want to use on your skin. Once you,and your doctor  have decided on your type of laser you will need for your procedure, you will need to follow a post laser skin treatment plan to protect your skin, and allow it to heal and regenerate.

Failure to follow your post-operative management plan that your doctor prescribes can lead to complications that include:

Complications From Laser Surgery Resurfacing
  • Hypopigmentation
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation of darker skin individuals or those exposed to UV Sunlight while in the healing process
  • Excessive Crusting
  • Delay Healing
  • Post Operative Infection
  • Development of Scars
  • Postoperative laser skin care management applies to most types of laser surgery, but is most imperative when dealing with ablative laser procedures. Post-operative laser care following resurfacing should focus on the prevention of possible infections that can include;bacterial, viral and fungal. Following your doctors treatment plan will also insure that you’re comfortable and have a faster healing process.

Postoperative Laser Skin Care

Laser Hair Removal
Laser hair removal does not really require any major post-laser care apart from avoiding the sun and using an effective moisturizer for a few days. Some patients may experience some redness and stinging after undergoing laser hair removal, and the best treatment for this is to apply ice packs to the area.

Sclerotherapy
Vein removal via a laser procedure is becoming more popular, and post of care usually consists of ice to the area if there is pain, and the use of gradual compression stockings following the laser procedure for 1 to 2 weeks if your doctor advices.

Non-Ablative Lasers

If you have chosen to have a non-ablative laser procedure you will not have to follow as many precautions as someone who has an ablative laser procedure. A non ablative laser procedure does not burn off the skin surface,  instead the laser targets the tissue under the skin and stimulates new collagen growth. There offers you less downtime than an ablative laser, and less risks of complications.

Ablative Laser Procedures such as CO2 and Er:YAG

Ablative Laser Procedures can be a little bit of a painful recovery period of anywhere from 7 to 10 days for the ablated areas to heal. Many doctors may  recommend bio-occlusive dressings,or Vigilon dressings for the first 3 days for wound healing and pain reduction. Remember that ablative lasers actually vaporize the skin away, and this can lead to some substantial downtime. Treat your skin with care, and don’t try to hasten skin removal or pick at any sores or flakes of skin as this might lead to an infection,or scaring.

A helpful home solution is frequent soaking of the skin using diluted 1 to 4 part strength mild vinegar solutions, normal saline or cool tap water, followed by a gentle debridement of the skin up to three times a day as ordered by your doctor to help loosen and remove the dying skin debris. Then you can apply Aquaphor healing ointment until the skin is healed for approximately another week’s time.  You will notice that the skin will maintain a red to pink appearance for 6 to 12 weeks, during which time it is very important to not have any direct sunlight on the lasered areas. Always use a  broad-spectrum sun block, but this is especially true once you have had a laser skin treatment.

You may want to apply a Vitamin K product.  Research published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology showed that using a vitamin K cream after laser treatments can reduce the severity of bruising and promote healing of the ablated skin.

Many doctors will prescribe a prophylactic antibiotic for a minimum of 5 days post-op and antiviral therapy started pre-op accompanying all resurfacing procedures.

The Sun Is Not Good For Lasered Skin!

Of course not procedure is going to be risk-free,but by following your doctor’s advice, and staying out of the sun you should have beautiful results that will last for years to come.
