Are Your Skin Problems Being Caused By Stress?
Are Skin Problems Due To Stress?
Yes,studies done on university students, and much stressed caregivers showed that indeed stress affects skin. Not only doe’s stress affect your skin it can play a role in higher rates of heart disease, early dementia, decreased immune system response, higher incidences of common colds, and cellular damage.
Experts in the field of medicine have coined a term for Stress Related Skin Problems “psychodermatology.”This new field of dermatology is determining more and more that a person’s emotional stress levels can play a role in skin problems they are seeing on a daily basis. Skin problems due stress:more studies are being done says Karen Mallin,PsyD,an instructor in the departments of psychiatry &behavioral sciences and dermatology &cutaneous surgery of the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami.
Stress Has Been Shown To:
- Can Contribute to wrinkles,crows feet,frown lines,loose skin,dull skin,Under eye bags,dark under eye circles
- Can Cause or worsen:hives, eczema, acne, rosacea, vitilago, and psoriasis
- Can Lead To Hormone Imbalances (acne, weight gain, dry skin)
- Increases Glucocorticoid production (Can worsen many skin disorders, including psoriasis, and atrophic dermatitis.
- Can Exacerbate Lupus,Fibromyalgia, and other chronic conditions
- Lower Serum Levels Of An Important Antioxidant Vitamin E
- Cause Temporary Hair Loss
- Alter the heart rhythms
- Causes blood to become stickier
- Can impair and damage the clearance of fat molecules in the body, thus raising blood-cholesterol levels
- Create a damaging inflammatory response,(thought to be responsible for injuries in the arteries that contribute to heart disease)

Two Other Recent Studies:
The studies showed a striking connection between psychological stress and the physical markers of cellular stress and aging. Researchers measured the specific DNA protective structure called telomeres made up of protein complexes that cap the ends of chromosomes and support genetic stability, and can be found at the ends of our chromosomes. These DNA structures determine when a cell is to die,and are the cell cycle of our cell division.
In this process a cell divides,a portion of telomeres or DNA reduces, and after each cell division, only so much telomeres DNA will remain. The cell will eventually stop producing the telomeres, and the older or damaged cell stops dividing completely. Telomeres play a significant role in determining how many times a cell divides, its overall health, and its total life span.
It seems that stress causes a form of oxidation to the telomeres, which in turn results in significant DNA damage, decreasing the life of the cell dramatically.
“The recent study demonstrated the deleterious effects of mental stress on the length of telomeres in humans. The study suggests we can accelerate our biological age by as many as 17 years by being exposed to what we perceive to be a high psychological stress for prolonged periods of time.”
The study did show that shorter duration stress may be beneficial and appear to do little cellular damage, and may even help boost the immune system against future bouts of stress. However, long term stress, can do significant damage to cells, your heart, and your mental health as well.
